X Factor Background
The X-Factor is produced by Simon Cowell and was created as a replacement for the hugely popular musical talent show Pop Idol which ran between 2001 and 2003. The title of the show refers to the “something” that makes a star and the winner of the show receives a recording contract with Cowell’s record company Syco Music.
In the show, the three to four judges criticise contestants’ performances and mentor them, with each judge taking on a particular category such as Groups, Men, Women and Over 40s. Viewers vote for their favourite contestants to get them through each live show, with one contestant eliminated each week until the final where the final three contestants are revealed.
The reality show has proven to be so popular that numerous other countries have launched their own versions of the show including in Albania, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, India, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and many more.
Unfortunately, X-Factor in these countries never reached the popularity of the original show in the UK. When the show first launched it consisted of judges Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell. In 2005, singer Paula Abdul joined the panel as a guest judge when Osbourne was away. Despite its popularity, The X-Factor has sparked outrage numerous times. The show is frequently criticised for commercialism that detracts from the show’s purpose of discovering musical talent. Other controversies including issues and errors regarding phone voting as well as allegations that the show is heavily edited and staged for viewership.
