Rising Star Sinks In the United States; ITV Worried

Rising Star, the new music competition that debuted in the United States, has flopped, leaving ITV executives scrambling to make adjustments. They’ve now condensed the entire series into a one-week sprint hoping it either takes off or crashes and burns quickly to get it over with.  The show features a unique app voting system but viewers complained there was only 15 minutes of actual performance in the entire 2 hour show. Maybe they need to have more of the actual competition than the filler material. That would be my recommendation.

Rising Star is coming to ITV in March

ITV bosses have got cold feet over new singing talent show Rising Star after it flopped in the US – and will “strip” the whole series across one week.

The show, which is based on an Israeli format, had been earmarked for the weekly Sunday night slot as replacement for Dancing on Ice from January.

But chiefs have lost so much confidence in the format they are desperate to avoid any sort of overlap with The Voice on BBC1.

The show, which uses real-time voting by viewers via an app, is set to air across one week in March.

Sunday nights in the New Year will instead feature Stars in Their Eyes with Harry Hill and Celebrity Squares with Warwick Davies.

One insider revealed: “ITV have had a huge wobble over the series since it did badly in America, but they have bought it and so have to get on with showing it.

Entertainment Weekly’s review asked: “Is Rising Star that next big thing? The short answer is no. The long answer? Nooooooo.”

Other critics said the “fancy LED wall” displaying the faces of the wannabe contestants wasn’t enough to hold interest and complained there was only 15 minutes of singing in a show lasting two hours.

Rising Star isn’t doing so well in the United States and ITV bosses are worried the same will happen in the UK. Perhaps people are satisfied with X Factor and American Idol? Perhaps they are tired of the whole find-a-star reality shows in general. I think it’s because Rising Star is boring — there’s only 15 minutes of actual competition in 2 hours of programming. Yawn.  Pass the nachos… Find something else to watch quick…
