If you have a busy life and travel in and out of the UK, like my wife and I do, you will appreciate this news. ITV launches their ITV Essentials European catch-up TV service. ITV Essentials is just in the beginning stages, but it allows non-UK based viewers the chance to watch on-demand catch-up episodes of soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Here’s the scoop.

In an effort to expand their reach to both expatriate and foreign-born fans of their shows, leading UK commercial broadcaster ITV have confirmed the launch of their own ‘international subscription service’ that will perform a similar function to the online services of BBC Worldwide and their own home-based ITV Player platform, albeit in a much more limited fashion than each.

This service takes on the title ‘ITV Essentials’, and in its role will provide non-UK based viewers the chance to watch on-demand catch-up episodes of soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale whilst away from the home market.

Surprisingly, especially given the ‘monthly subscription’ charge of €5.49 (£4.64), that is all viewers will be entitled to from the channel’s selection of original programming, though it will be available to consume in no less than 12 European territories (Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain), and available for catch-up on a 30-day basis.

Meanwhile, ITV have also graciously chosen to remove advertising for their subscribers, who can sign up for single 30-day ‘residency’ (automatically renewed monthly) or ‘holiday’ (one-off purchase) packages with no price differences. ITV are noted as collaborating with Saffron Digital for ITV Essentials, with the platform set to be made available through Wi-Fi only, albeit with future plans to release on iPad and iPhone and perhaps offer mobile signal support with it.

Neale Dennett, the ‘controller of pay & distribution’ for ITV, said of the new service: “This is a landmark deal for ITV. We are thrilled that we can now deliver the UK’s favourite soaps to the millions of British fans living and visiting abroad. In Saffron Digital we have found the perfect partner to bring these ambitions to life.”
