ITV have today (May 23rd) announced the commissioning of a one-off drama, written bySimon Nye (Reggie PerrinMen Behaving Badly), about comedian Tommy Cooper.

Shameless star David Threlfall takes the lead role, whilst the role of Dove – which was Cooper’s nickname for his wife, Gwen – will be played by New Tricks‘ Amanda Redman.

The two-hour film focuses on the dilemma Cooper faced when he fell in love with assistant Mary Kay, and embarked upon a relationship that would last 17 years – he was unable to choose between Dove and Mary, and his untimely death live on air in 1984 meant that he never did.
