Strictly Come Dancing Background

Strictly Come Dancing, generally referred to as Strictly, sees celebrities partner with a professional dancer to complete dances each week. In the episode, each pair is given a score out of ten by a panel of judges and must score high in order to proceed to the next episode and to eventually reach the finale.

The series first aired in May 2004 when it was presented by Bruce Forsyth. However, Forsythe retired from the show in November 2013 before later appearing as host on the 2014 Christmas special and sending a video message on the Children In Need 2015 special which Forsythe was originally planned to host but had cancelled due to illness. On August 18th, 2017, Forsythe died.

Since Forsythe’s retirement in 2013, he was succeeded by Tess Daly and eventually Claudia Winkleman. The show has also seen several guest presenters take on the show including Natasha Kaplinsky, Ronnie Corbett and Zoe Ball.

Meanwhile, judges on the show have switched hands multiple times. Since its inception, we’ve seen judges including long-term judges Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli along with Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, Len Goodman, Arlene Phillips, singer Alesha Dixon and Darcey Bussell.

Famous Strictly Gossip, Facts And Mishaps

Strictly has been remade in other 40 countries around the world and the reality show was named the world’s most successful reality television format in the Guinness Book of Records. Ratings for the show are incredibly high and it’s been reported that electricity use in the country rises significantly during the show as many viewers boil water for tea as it ends. This happens so much that National Grid staff watch the show for closing credits to prepare for the surge of power.

While Strictly Come Dancing has proven to be one of the most-watched shows in the UK, it’s also been at the centre of numerous controversies. The first hit in December 2008 when the thousands of viewers complained over an error in the voting system during the show’s sixth series. This resulted in the disqualification of a couple and an investigation by media regulator Ofcom.

In the same year, it was revealed that 66-year-old Arlene Phillips, who had judged the show since it first aired in 2004, was being replaced by singer Alesha Dixon, 30. The new prompted accusations of ageism and sexism and Dixon’s first appearance on the reality show resulted in over 200 complaints from viewers who deemed she was “unsuitable” and “unqualified”. The BBC and Dixon’s fellow judges praised and defended her from critics.

The controversies haven’t stopped viewers from watching the show and in some cases, it seems to only have improved viewership. In fact, many fans can’t wait to see what drama will erupt from upcoming series, so much so that they regularly turn to us to discover the latest Strictly spoilers.
