We even have a Coronation Street quiz – go check it out and many other TV and movies quiz.

Coronation Street Background

Corrie is set on Coronation Street in the fictional town of Weatherfield. According to the show, the street was established in the early 1900s and was named in honour of the coronation of King Edward VII who reigned as king between January 1901 and May 1910.

The show is popular thanks to the depiction of a working-class community as well as humour. In its 50 plus years, Corrie has established several hugely popular characters who have cemented themselves as pop culture icons. This includes Ken Barlow, Hilda Ogden, Tracy Barlow, Gail Platt, Steve McDonald and many more.

When the show was first created, Grana Television (ITV) only commissioned 13 episodes but within six months, Corrie had gone on to become the most-watched British television program. Since then, the soap has tackled numerous subjects including sexual exploitation, rape, incest, murder, cancer, depression, identity theft, drink driving, skin whitening, miscarriage, adoption, abuse and so much more.

Recent storylines saw character Karl Munro start a fire in the cellar of the Rovers Return killing Sunita Alahan as well as a female firefighter. Other storylines saw the introduction of the show’s first Muslim family as well as a hit and run. A major storyline that aired in 2017 involved the mysterious murder of Ken Barlow who was pushed down the stairs.

Famous Gossip, Facts And Mishaps

Corrie is so well-known and loved that it was actually listed as the longest-running television soap in the Guinness World Records in 2010. In 2015, the show also aired a special live ITV episode to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Coronation Street has also launched several spin-offs including Pardon The Expression, Turn Out The Lights, The Brothers McGregor and Albion Market. Several actors also appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show and Corrie also took part in a crossover with Eastenders for Children In need back in 2010. A film based on the soap has a planned release date for 2020 to tie in with the show’s 60th anniversary but details of the upcoming movie have remained under lock.

As mentioned, Coronation Street has cemented itself in popular culture. In 1984, British band Queen released hit single ‘I Want To Break Free’ and the music video depicts the band members dressed in women’s clothing, parodying characters from the popular soap.
