Seems that the TV and music mogul doesn’t want to stop with having some of the bestselling TV formats in the world. Now he wants to take over the internet as well. Cowell wants to launch a global talent search online, where people can show their outstanding skills and abilities by using video auditions on YouTube.
Cowell’s company, SyCo, will partner up with the website, and the idea is to allow people to showcase talents that would not be recognised by the traditional TV shows, like make-up artists or trick shots.
The You Generation contest-as it will be called- will start somewhere in late March, and will run up for at least a year. It will seek out a new skill every fortnight, with each contestant competing for an amazing prize. After the first 52 weeks , the overall winner will receive an extra reward.
The contest will take place in over 26 territories, like the UK and Ireland, USA, Russia, South East Asia, etc. Contestants can enter the competition really easily, just by uploading a video. Some of the searches would look for talents in areas like TV presenting, singing, cooking or make-up.
Cowell has been very interested to use the power of YouTube after seeing how many views some of the most popular performances from his shows have gathered on the video-sharing website. For example, Susan Boyle, the runner up for Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, gathered more than 500 million views on YouTube of her performance of “ I had a dream”. One Direction, the band formed by Cowell after the 2010 edition of X Factor, have more than 800 million views on YouTube. The entries will be judged by a panel of experts, assembled and selected for each two-weekly contest. The top videos will be highlighted on the YouTube channel.
A spokesperson from Cowell’s company declared that: The channel offers people with unconventional and original talents the opportunity to have their talent recognised by the world and become the next internet star. This “new worldwide entertainment concept” will be the “first global audition process” , where people will have the chance to show off their outstanding skills and win amazing prizes – simply by uploading a video.
