In an interview for Notion Magazine Nicole Scherzinger, the X Factor judge and former Pussycat Doll, talks about her gothic style, adopted when she was much younger.

It’s hard to imagine the 34 year popstar as a full-on rocker, but if wasn’t for her mom sending her to the American talent show Popstars, she still might be embracing the Goth style. During her teen years she used to be a backing vocal for a rock band called Days Of The New, that supported the Foo Fighters on a tour. After quitting the band and working as a make-up artist in 2001, when her mother convinced her to participate to an audition for Popstars. Reflecting her musical style back then she was trying to oppose, refusing to turn into a pop princess. She told the magazine: I was so theatre at the time I was like “I am not going to be a Spice Girl”. That is just not me. I mean I’m a Spice Girls fan now, but at the time I only wore black and I was Goth. I would have been Goth Spice. Ethnic Chanting Spice, that’s who I thought I was. She eventually sent in an audition tape, with her singing I Will Always Love You and some pictures. I brought my little package that I’d put together with my pictures and I’d made my own home music video. I was on it. I gave them my package and I sang [Whitney’s I Will Always Love You] for them and the rest is history. That brought me to Los Angeles.

She was chosen to be part of a girl group called Eden’s Crush, but they split a year later due to their fail to make it to the charts. During that period she had the opportunity to be in the Black Eyed Peas, but she couldn’t accept because of her contract. They eventually found Fergie, but it would have been interesting to see Nicole with Will.I.Am and the gang.

She also revealed that she was the first to receive the chance to sing the global hit We Found Love, made popular by Rihanna and Calvin Harris instead. She turned it down because she was too busy at the time. They’d sent me a few dance tracks and I wasn’t able to get to them and I was like, “Oh, there’s so much dance and I want to take a break from it. That was my fault. I slept on it. There is some regret in her words, but how can you not feel it when you look at the massive success the single had.

In the meantime there’s a rumour that she will still be part of the X Factor panel, and she is supposed to launch a new single in the UK on the 10th of March.
