What do you get when you combine female priests with a mysterious murder? Exorcism of course! That’s what’s in store with the new ITV drama called Midwinter of the Spirit. The drama has been commissioned by ITV for April of 2015. The drama is based on Phil Rickman’s books. Casting has not yet commenced and it will be pivotal in the drama’s success. This drama sounds like the combination of a horror movie with a crime drama but we wait to pass judgement until we see it ourselves and hear what its audience thinks.

Midwinter of the Spirit ITV drama

ITV has ordered a new supernatural crime drama.

Midwinter of the Spirit has been commissioned for three episodes, with production set to begin in Herefordshire in April 2015. The three-part series has been commissioned for ITV Encore

The series will air on ITV Encore and is based on the books by novelist Phil Rickman. Stephen Volk (The Awakening) will lead the adaptation.

The series follows country vicar Merrily Watkins, who is one of the few women priests working as an exorcist in the UK. When a grisly murder takes place in her local area, the police come calling for her assistance.

As Merrily assists DCI Annie Howe and DS Franny Bliss in their investigation, she leads them into a dark and dangerous world.

ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning, Steve November, said: “Midwinter of the Spirit is a contemporary and edgy drama which draws upon dark, pagan forces which are intriguing and spiritually frightening.

“We’re delighted to commission three episodes of a potentially returnable crime drama with a supernatural twist.”

Phil Collinson (Doctor Who, Coronation Street) will produce the series, alongside executive producer Kieran Roberts (Coronation Street). Casting announcements will be made in due course.
