Coronation Street star William Roache is standing trial accused of committing historic sexual offences against five girls.

The 81-year-old veteran soap star was arrested at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, last May and later charged with two counts of raping a 15-year-old girl in Lancashire in 1967.

A month later he was additionally charged with five indecent assaults involving four girls aged 16 and under, allegedly committed in the Manchester area between 1965 and 1971.

The judge in the trial has directed the jury to find Mr Roache not guilty of one charge of indecent assault. He remains on trial for the remaining charges, all of which he denies.

Dean Kirby is at Preston Crown Court covering the proceedings.

Ms Donn adds: ‘I suppose I was just very protective.’

She says visitors would not be able to get into the studios without going past the commissionaire’s desk.

The former press officer says she cannot remember Mr Roache having visitors at the studio, apart from perhaps his own children.

It will be interesting to watch this trial and see what the outcome is. William Roache is the longest-running actor on Coronation Street and is loved by millions I certainly hope he is innocent, but if not, popularity doesn’t matter, only justice does.
