Ant and Dec support their old pal Gazza in the battle for alcoholism

'Britain's Got Talent' judges auditions

After reading in The Sun about their old friend Paul Gascoigne fall from grace, Ant & Dec are determined to help him get through this. They want to join other celebrities, like Chris Evans and Piers Morgan, in paying for the England’s legend treatment in a rehab clinic from the US.

Dec said that: The first we heard was when we read about it in The Sun and we thought, ‘Bloody hell’. It’s just awful. We absolutely would help out if needed. I don’t know where it’s up to with him, but we’ll help.

Ant and Dec are both Newcastle United fans, and they we’re keeping in touch regularly with Gazza, when he was in good shape. Ant told The Sun magazine: As a country, the goodwill towards him is huge and we all feel really sad. We would speak to him on the phone and see him at things like Soccer Aid. And we got on, us all being Geordies. We wish him luck and love. It’s quite shocking.

Ant also revealed that there we’re some talks with Paul some years ago about him participating in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here show .Turns out he really wanted to do it but Ant and Dec we’re reluctant about it. They didn’t want their childhood hero to go up there and fall apart. Eventually the ITV execs said no, and Paul was displeased with the decision.

The Geordie duo also showed their support towards X Factor judge Louis Walsh, who might be axed from the show, after nine years on the panel.  I can’t see the show without Louis. He’s been such a staple of that panel. He keeps it interesting, Dec said. Louis really wants to make it ten years and I think they should let him have his ten years. With all this debate about getting rid of judges, who you are going to replace them with? It requires skill, he continued.

Ant and Dec owe Louis Walsh a favour after their ratings for Saturday Night Takeaway reached 7 million viewers, thanks to Louis’s cameo. He played an even more quirky version of himself, which included Banana-telephoning Danii Minogue or diving into his fridge, so it can “cool down”.  The major ratings we’re a huge relief for Ant and Dec, who we’re the ones to convince ITV to bring the show back. It was really nerve-wracking. We wondered if we were the only people excited about its return. We had to persuade ITV that it was the right time to bring it back, said Dec. Ant added that Saturday Night Takeaway needed some new energy , and it had to become bigger and better.

They needed this to work, especially after the failure of the roulette –themed gameshow Red or Black, which was cancelled after its second series.

The two now plan a silent comedy, which will start filming in summer, about two friends that don’t talk to each other. Dec detailed:  It’s about two friends who live together but don’t speak. They are always trying to get one up on each other. Some of the inspiration for the comedy came from their own relationship.

This year the duo celebrate 24 years of being together, since they first met on the kids’ drama Byker Grove, and they  plan to keep their partnership as long as they could. Ant said:  No one would stop us not working together. We don’t have a rule, we just enjoy it. And for the foreseeable future that’s what we want to do.

Unfortunately, there are no plans for their return to the music business, PJ and Duncan are over and out for good, but they still get royalties over their song Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble. We get a royalty cheque for Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble every six months… for about four quid, Dec joked.
